Primary and Logical Partitions
- Many operating systems, including DOS and Windows 95, can only be booted from primary partitions. However, such OSes as Windows 95OSR/98, OS/2, Linux can be booted from any partition.
Some operating systems do not see primary partitions except those they were booted from (OS/2).
Knowing these limitations allows deciding what partitions it is better to use and for what purposes. Primary partitions are better used for booting operating systems and keeping solely system folders and files.
Logical partitions can keep all the other information, since they are accessible from most operating systems.
Besides, if you are going to keep several operating systems on your computer, it is better to install those that can be booted from logical partitions onto logical partitions, so that they do not use up extra primary partitions.
